Oomph! is a specialty coffee roasting house based in Hobart, Tasmania.

The distant island of Tasmania is home to artists and boutique producers of fine food and drink. In the tradition of skilled craftsmen – seeking perfection rather than mass production – the Kindred family has brought its skills as multi-award winning master roasters, show judges, barista champions and barista trainers, to the supply of coffee for the discerning coffee lover.

Oomph! is also a training house for those seeking to make a career in the fast-growing and exciting world of coffee.

What is specialty coffee?

Specialty coffee is gourmet coffee, or premium quality coffee. It is coffee that is grown in ideal conditions and has the highest flavour. It is easy to say that you have specialty coffee, but the fact is that only one percent of coffee on the market is true specialty coffee. Oomph! is in the top one percent in the world, using certified, organic, shade-grown, washed Arabica coffee beans.

The test, for you, is in the taste. Strong does not mean special. Cheap Robusta coffee beans, used in instant coffees and most chain coffee-shop outlets – even some that claim to serve specialty coffee – do not have the complex sugars and round flavours and distinctiveness of genuine specialty coffee.

Oomph! is a true specialty coffee for the discerning.

Coffee – is it good for you?

An affordable indulgence

Coffee is a legal stimulant. The caffeine gives you a lift. At the same time, it relaxes you.

That’s not all. It’s good for you. The antioxidants in coffee block free radicals from causing damage to the cells of your body. Medical studies show that moderate consumption of coffee reduces the risk of breast cancer, heart disease, type-2 diabetes, cirrhosis of the liver, gout and both Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.

Small wonder people get intense about coffee.

  • Oomph! is a craft roaster, and a retail and wholesale supplier of globally-responsible specialty coffees;
  • Oomph! is a supplier of high quality commercial and domestic coffee equipment;
  • Oomph! is a market leader in Tasmania for the growth of wholesale coffee outlets;
  • Oomph! is seeking suitable franchisees to open sites in all states of Australia, except Tasmania.

The Oomph! Coffee Roastery is now back in town!

Joper Portuguese coffee roaster

You will find it in Murray Street (opposite Chemist Warehouse), only a short walk from the CBD.

The new premises boast a complete kitchen, a chef catering for a full open cafe, where coffee is prepared on our new SLAYER espressor machine (see below).

Our beautiful Portuguese roaster will feature, and the skills of our roasters will be on show while you sample the end results in the cafe.

We will offer unique micro lot single estate coffees sourced from around the world, and also plan cupping sessions which will be open to the public. Participants will experience the exact procedures and tasting adventures we go through to select the various coffees used for our own blends.

The whole warehouse is open to the public for sales of all things coffee.

The new SLAYER espresso machine ...

The Slayer espresso machine

Craft-built in Seattle, USA by Eric Perkunder, this machine is a first for us, and indeed for Tasmania.

This is a powerful industrial craft-built machine with virtually endless steam capacity, plus brew temperature stability on multiple groups even during maximum volume use.

So excited to have it here! The cost is around 5 times more than a normal high quality espresso machine, but when you taste the results we think you will agree it is well worth it.

To be accredited as a responsible coffee grower, certain social, environmental and organizational criteria must be met, such as:

  • Hygiene
  • Soil management
  • Worker Safety
  • Responsible use of Agro-chemicals
  • Fundamental labour rights and access to health care, decent housing and schooling
  • Forest preservation

The Beans ~

Oomph! starts with the selection of the best single-origin, organic, shade-grown, washed Arabica beans – certified in accordance with the quality standards of Fair Trade and Rainforest Alliance. These cost us four times the price of the cheap beans that go into most chain-outlet coffees. Bitter is not a substitute for the flavour and pleasure that comes from high-end specialty coffee.

The Master Roaster ~

When it comes to roasting, Carlos Kindred is the Master Roaster. He is a certified Sydney Royal Show judge. He learned his trade under World Barista Champion Paul Bassett. In 2006 Carlos Kindred was the most awarded roaster in Australia.

Roasting is an art and a science. This is not part of the process that should be left to hit and miss, or to the urgency of mechanized production.
